Should the block select/inventory have tabs or a search bar or both?

Tabs would be funny, actually. Imagine servers being able to register their custom blocks under a category specified by a name of their own. On Singleplayer, you'll have just the "Classic" and "Extended" tabs, however, it'll be a whole different story on multiplayer servers.

You'd have servers that actually make an effort to assign their custom blocks to the appropriate category, but also servers that assign only a fraction of their custom blocks to the respective categories or otherwise assign categories to blocks in an inconsistent manner. The best thing you could do in this case would be to double check the "Other" tab on servers deemed by you to be suspect, since that could presumably be the place where unassigned blocks go.

We would then have servers that take advantage of the fact that they could name tabs however they please, and then decide to name these tabs something random and mediocre. They'll throw their primary custom blocks into there unironically, so that new players will have to scour across many different poorly-named tabs just to find their favorite block they've been encountering in-game.

I'm not completely opposed to the idea, but I'd ideally want to ensure newcomers can find their way around a lower-quality inventory as assembled by a server. What are your ideas for making such a system more foolproof?

Ok, if they add tabs there should be a way to search ALL of the blocks with a search box.

And there could be an option to just not have item tabs. The idea is if you don't add any tabs then they wont show up and it will just be like it is now.

Or the user could make thair own sorting but that would be a pain to implement...

and there could be an option to disable tabs entirely on the client. I think tabs should be on by defaul though because then servers just wont bother because there will be more people not using the tab feature.

It's Classic. It didn't had inventory tabs search and stuff, This is really dumb suggestion in my opinion.

For Classic but with "cheats" and plus features like more blocks and stuff.

classic didnt have custom blocks or fancy lighting or hax or custom enviroment

so your telling me tabs/search isnt an enhancement?

It is but not a feature because we have not too much blocks even if we have custom ones.

there can be lots of blocks CPE doesnt say anything about a custom block limit however MCgalaxy only allows for 767 blocks... thats quite a lot

also by default MCgalaxy has 255 block limit but you can increase it to 767
