why does my skin show up as the default steve skin?

Try typing /skin -own, your skin might have been changed causing it to use the default instead. Using the command will reset the skin, using the one in the Classicube Database. -
It says something about not being able to access game files, I can see that the files exist but they "don't exist" in classicube.

It doesn't really work on Windows 95, I tried it but I get a lot of error messages and it will not go into a world.
