    You can do that without NBTExplorer on an MCgalaxy server, using /lb edit (id of block) fogcolor (hex code) and /lb edit (id of block) lava/lamplight (0-15) . You can then press Save Level to play it in singleplayer. Not sure why you can't to it in singleplayer with /blockedit, would be an easy fix.

    You cannot X-ray on ClassiCube with only a texture pack since classicube uses backface culling. (Might be called something else, I forgot) If you really wanted to though, you could make a client mod that changes the blockdraw of certain blocks, and X-ray that way. (What would you want to xray anyway??)
